Hotel Catalonia Puerta del Sol

The cool ashlar stones of the interior courtyard in this grand 18th-century building offer a welcome oasis after a hot day’s city walking. The Catalonia is not exciting in comparison to some of Madrid’s newer hotels, but it does offer great value and courteous comfort in a location that’s ideal for all the sights. The modestly sized rooms are especially clean, and soundly appointed with hardwood floors, marble bathrooms, and a soothing beige color scheme. Most have large, double-glazed windows opening onto the courtyard or Calle Atocha, and noise from the busy street is largely kept at bay. There’s a generous buffet breakfast and the English-speaking staff are especially welcoming.
