Family-owned and actively managed since it opened in 1939, the Moderno keeps reinventing itself without losing the charm that has always made it one of the nicer lodgings on Puerta del Sol. The building dates from 1857, and some of the internal structure prevents the expansion of the small rooms on the first four floors. Ask for the upper levels for a little more room to spread out. Rooms with an outdoor terrace might be worth an extra 30€ per night during times of year when you might want to sit outside. They have the most space as well as fabulous views of Puerta del Sol. A few triple and family rooms are also available.
