The Madrid Edition
The ornate granite doorway by the 18th century architect Pedro de Ribera is just the first thing to strike you at the Madrid branch of Ian Schrager’s achingly hip hotel chain. Inside, a stunning white marble spiral staircase sweeps through the lobby, where fashionistas share cocktails and tech bros tap on their laptops. The design is by the British architect John Pawson, who said his aim was to combine the energy of Madrid’s post-Franco La Movida movement with the richness of a Velázquez painting. Two hundred guest rooms and suites are kitted out identically in minimalist white, with Baroque headboards echoing the curlicues of Ribera’s grand entrance. The Market at Edition restaurant, in oil painting ochres and dark wood paneling, continues the theme of Spanish traditions in a modern setting.
