Getting There

Compared to the trek out to Tibet's other renowned holy mountain, Kailash, getting to Amnye Machen is straightforward. The bus from Xining (12 hr.; ¥152) passes Lajia Si, a charming Geluk monastery on the upper reaches of the Yellow River en-route to Maqin's bus station at Tuanjie Lu 137. Facing out from the bus station, you are on Tuanjie Lu. As major streets go, that's it. The direction to your left is roughly north. Buses and minibuses run to Thelma and Chawo for Amnye Machen, but Jeeps are quicker; either way you'll need a permit to walk the circuit.

Tours & Guides

Permits and trips to Amnye Machen are best arranged through Tibetan Connections or the Qinghai Mountaineering Association in Xining.
