Hotels in Matanzas
There are currently no hotels catering to travelers in Matanzas, and no restaurants worthy of a hearty recommendation. Most folks -- and I recommend this -- come here on day trips from either Havana or Varadero. There is a handful of casas particulares congregated around the downtown center. Casa Alma, Calle Milanés (C/83) 29008 between 290 and 292 (tel. 45/24-2449; hostalalma@gmail.com), is a lovely colonial home with well-preserved mediopuntos (semi-circular stained glass windows positioned above wooden doors). The most happening spot in town is the Café Atenas, Calle Magdalena and Calle Milanés, Plaza de la Vigía (tel. 45/25-3493), a simple 24-hour cafe and snack bar, with an easygoing ambience and comfortable seating both indoors and outdoors on a cool patio.
