The focal point for a fifth of the world’s population when in prayer is the Ka’aba, the cube-shaped building in the middle of the Haram — literally “the sanctuary”. At prayer time, the mosque can fill to its 800,000 capacity. This is the only mosque in the world where worshippers pray “in the round,” as Muslims will always pray facing the Ka’aba. Al Haram has welcomed the prayerful everyday for millenia, through little remains of its earliest structure. An Ottoman arcade surrounds the central courtyard, last renovated in the 20th century.
