Muslims believe the prophet Muhammad and his companion Abu Bakr hid in the Ghar al Thawr (the Bull’s Cave) after fleeing Mecca into exile. As their persecutors knew they were heading to Medina, the prophet Muhammed and Abu Bakr headed in the opposite direction to avoid detection. Few pilgrims take the arduous hike up to the cave near the top of the 754m (2,474 ft.) peak. Pilgrims typically go with their Hajj/Umrah group and leader or anyone who has done the trek before. The trail is rocky and steep.
