Ghar Hira (Cave of Hira)

This rocky mount is the site of the Ghar Hira (Cave of Hira). Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad would retreat and meditate here regularly before he received his first revelations from the angel Jibreel (Gabriel). As the cave is only 270m (886 ft.) above ground level, many pilgrims take the 600 steps up to see the 4m by 1½m (12 ft. x 5 ft.) enclosure.
