The spire atop the Theatres Building of the Arts Centre, on the banks of the Yarra River, crowns the city’s leading performing arts complex. Beneath it, the State Theatre, the Playhouse, and the Fairfax Studio present performances that are the focal point of culture in Melbourne. The State Theatre, seating 2,085 on three levels, can accommodate elaborate stagings of opera, ballet, musicals, and more. The Playhouse is a smaller venue that often books the Melbourne Theatre Company. The Fairfax is more intimate still and is often used for experimental theater or cabaret. Adjacent to the Theatres Building is Hamer Hall, home of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and often host to visiting orchestras. Many international stars have graced this stage, which is known for its excellent acoustics. You can do a guided tour of Hamer Hall Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30pm or on Fridays at 11am for A$30.

Guided tours of other parts of The Arts Centre are also offered. Tour the Theatres Building Monday to Thursday and Saturdays, or do a backstage tour on Sunday at 11am.
