A 4.4 kg gold nugget—known as “Goldasaurus”—is the latest highlight in this surprisingly interesting small museum. Found by a local prospector, it is one of the things you will discover more about by taking the free “Golden Treasures” 20-minute guided tour of the museum, run daily at 4:30pm. As well as a large collection of gold nuggets found at Ballarat, the museum has displays of alluvial deposits, gold ornaments, coins, and the history of gold mining in the area.
