Memphis takes its name from the ancient capital of Egypt, and here in the Art Museum of the University of Memphis you can view artifacts from ancient Memphis. An outstanding collection of Egyptian art and artifacts makes this one of the most interesting museums in Memphis. Among the items on display is a loaf of bread dating from between 2134 B.C. and 1786 B.C. A hieroglyph-covered sarcophagus contains the mummy of Iret-iruw, who died around 2,200 years ago. Numerous works of art and funerary objects show the high level of skill achieved by ancient Egyptian artists. In addition to the Egyptian exhibit, there is a small collection of West African masks and woodcarvings, and changing exhibitions in the main gallery. Tip: Free, 20-minute, guided tours of the African and Egyptian collections are offered weekdays. Book at least two weeks in advance. Allow 30 minutes to an hour.
