Memphis Brooks Museum of Art
First opened in 1916 as the Brooks Memorial Art Gallery, this is the oldest art museum in Tennessee; it contains one of the largest art collections of any museum in the mid-South. With more than 7,000 pieces in the permanent collection, the Brooks frequently rotates works on display. The museum's emphasis is on European and American art of the 18th through the 20th centuries, with a very respectable collection of Italian Renaissance and baroque paintings and sculptures as well. Some of the museum's more important works include pieces by Auguste Rodin, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Thomas Hart Benton, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Allow an hour to 90 minutes. Note: The Brooks is in the midst of a move downtown, which is scheduled to be finished by late 2025 (though the date has been pushed back several times already); However the museum will remain open in its current location until the new one opens, when it will connect the Mississippi River to the core of downtown via a new public promenade. Check the website before you go.
