National Ornamental Metal Museum
Set on park-like grounds on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi, this small museum is dedicated to ornamental metalworking in all its forms. There are sculptures displayed around the museum’s gardens, a working blacksmith shop, and examples of jewelry and the type of ornamental wrought-iron grillwork seen on balconies in New Orleans. Tour options abound and all include a hands-on activity, from the $10 version where kids can hammer their names into copper bracelets to the $45 variety, which includes a guided tour of the sculpture garden and sends participants home with their hand-designed aluminum art tile. Full workshops are also available. Be sure to take a look at the ornate museum gates; they were created by 160 metalsmiths from 17 countries and feature a fascinating array of imaginative rosettes. Just across the street is a community park that includes an ancient Native American mound. Allow 1 hour.
