A de Arco

Located next to the Roman arch of Trajan, A de Arco is a modern-day forum. Late at night, groups of friends spill across its outdoor terrace, ordering tapas and drinks, testing the waitstaff’s powers of memory and arithmetic. Under these conditions, you might imagine the quality of the food would suffer, but both the tapas and entrees are first rate. After a refreshing gazpacho soup made with cherries from Jerte, the emphasis is firmly on sharing. Platefuls of Extremaduran jamón and white prawns from Huelva are popular, followed by impressive Retinto beef and Ibérico pork dishes for two. Inside is a cool, contemporary dining room, punctuated by sections of ancient stone. But it’s more fun outside at the forum.
