Kimpton Virgilio

The white, curving facade of the Kimpton Virgilio makes it look something like an Art Deco ocean liner moored on a leafy corner of the elegant Polanco neighborhood. Dating to 1940, the building—a protected landmark—started out as an apartment complex; in February 2024 it became the Kimpton brand’s first Mexico City outpost.

The hotel’s 48 rooms and suites center on an angular, interior covered courtyard that’s painted white and is overflowing with plants, as if taking a cue from the greenery of the many nearby parks. Guest rooms are spacious (230–450 square feet) and decorated in the sort of comfortably unremarkable, vaguely midcentury-modern style often favored by upscale hotel chains. The design scheme is redeemed, though, by the big, bright bathrooms with their handmade tiles in geometric patterns and by the rooms’ layouts showcasing capacious windows, especially in corner units with curving, floor-to-ceiling glass walls opening onto balconies facing the street.

Thoughtful perks abound, including morning snacks, an evening cocktail reception in the downstairs bar, rooftop yoga classes, and pet supplies—all for free (there are no fees or size limits for pets, either). You can also borrow a bike to explore the neighborhood; depending on your interests, lush and tranquil Parque Lincoln is just to the south, while the luxury shops of Avenida Presidente Masaryk, aka Mexico’s answer to Rodeo Drive, are just to the north.

Given the density of renowned restaurants in this part of town, you probably won’t feel compelled to prioritize dining in Virgilio’s tapas restaurant, Pepe Mesa Española. But you’ll definitely want to make your way to the hotel’s rooftop bar, La Caña, for cocktails and seafood-centric Latin bites. You can lounge in a cabana, take a dip in the small pool, and, on weekend evenings, enjoy live DJ sets while getting a look at Polanco from an elevated perch.
