Eden Roc Miami Beach
Just next door to the mammoth Fontainebleau, this Morris Lapidus–designed landmark, which opened in 1956, is a modernized throwback to old school Miami Beach, with three pools; five bars and restaurants, including stellar sushi spot Nobu; and a spa. The focal point—besides the oasis of pools, water features, and gardens, threaded with walkways and intimate seating areas—is the dramatic lobby bar reminiscent of the days of Sinatra and his Rat Pack. Rooms are clean, and comfy with no décor to speak of, and dings and scratches that show signs of age (they could use a bit of sprucing up). But those rooms that have views have spectacular ones. If we had a choice between Eden Roc and Fontainebleau, we’d choose the Eden Roc, hands down, for the seamless service and for a more relaxed, much less Las Vegasy vibe than its neighbor. Fun fact: Madonna shot her Bedtime Stories album cover in the penthouse here in 1994.
