The Betsy

The Betsy is the lone surviving example of Florida Georgian architecture on the famous byway, Ocean Drive. Behind its plantation-style shutters and columned facade, the The Betsy Hotelhotel offers a tropical colonial beachside haven. Each room and suite in the oceanfront hotel is a nod to the stately colonial rooms of yesteryear blended with the modern aesthetic of South Beach. Rooms in the Dixon wing feature white poster beds with shutters and crisp linens; 30 of the 70 rooms in the updated Hohauser wing have balconies; and all have marble bathrooms with Malin and Goetz amenities and mirrors with built-in LCD TVs, dark walnut hardwood floors and curated guest libraries.

Yup. This is a bookworm’s dream come true: beyond guestrooms, the salon-style lobby bar evokes the days of Dorothy Parker and her Algonquin pals with unabashedly intellectual programing, from book readings to art talks and nightly live jazz. The Betsy is also home to a surf-and-turf restaurant from A-list chef Laurent Tourondel; a rooftop deck with pool, café, and Zen garden for sunning and sunrise yoga; and an indoor/outdoor Italian trattoria which has a walk-up window nestled under a sculptural Poetry Rail honoring wordsmiths like Langston Hughes (we told you this was a literati hot spot), serving coffees to go. While the beach is a few steps away, the hotel also offers a serene courtyard pool, too, that’s popular with families. The fee for pets is $150,  but 50% of that goes to Miami-Dade Animal Rescue and the SPCA in Zimbabwe, the childhood home of one of the hotel’s owners.
