If you drive too fast out of the Design District and through residential Buena Vista, you’ll miss this strip mall with laundromat and supermarket in it, and you’d think, so? Well, behind that pink neon exclamation point is this marvel, a tiny, dimly lit, cute 30-seat space where chefs Alex Meyer and Luciana Giangrandi turn out the tantalizing pastas that make this the hardest reservation score in the city. We’re talking pappardelle with Florida rabbit; tortellini with foie gras, duck prosciutto and duck consommé; and the big splurge, white truffle tagliatelle with truffle butter and parmesan. It’s a fun place, not stuffy, with loud music and a mixed crowd of culinary curmudgeons and cool kids. For those who don’t score rezzies. walk-ins are welcome at the wine bar and Giangrandi offers this secret: get there at 5:30pm on the dot and you’ll get in.
OR, head to the team’s second eatery Walrus Rodeo, a wood fired restaurant serving an exquisite muffaletta panzanella, halibut puttanesca, and “proper Italian za” a few doors down at 5143 NE 2nd Ave. in the same strip. It’s open 5:30-10:30 Sunday through Thursday and 5:30 to 11pm Fridays and Saturdays and not as hard to get into as its sibling.
