Motek
Named for the word “sweetheart” in Hebrew, Motek has six locations in Miami—Brickell, Coral Gables, Downtown, South Beach and Miami Beach—but the one at the Aventura mall is its flagship. While the food here is called “Kosher style”, it’s not certified Kosher because they serve dairy, are open on the Sabbath, and do not have separate kitchens, utensils, etc. Located on the ground floor of the mall near the always mobbed Apple store, there is indoor and outdoor seating on a nice patio. On the menu? A lot! Motek serves specialties from across the Mediterranean, but specifically Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, Morocco, and Yemen. Much of it is good for sharing, which cuts the cost of eating here to moderate (despite the costly entrees). Best for a group: the flat pita with artichoke, cured fish roe, goat cheese, parmesan, wilted kale and caramelized onion; and the chicken shawarma plate, which comes with a house salad and delicious hummus. There are also excellent and large salads, hot mezzes, and even good burgers. They serve hard-to-find Greek and Israeli beer, which are a value during their very popular happy hours (Mon–Thur 3-7pm and Fri-Sat 3-6pm) when all beer, well spirits and selected wines are half off, and half sandwiches, hot and cold meze are offered at a bargain of $5 and $7.
