The iconic Bolshoi Theater is a must-see in Moscow, particularly after its multimillion-dollar renovation, which ended in late 2011 and which brought back the red velvet and gilded splendor of the original mid-19th-century building. The ballets and operas staged here are almost always excellent, and performances often sell out, despite their high prices. Be sure to plan at least a month ahead if you want to see a performance at the Bolshoi. The New Stage, a short walk from the main building, has nightly performances that are cheaper.
