Formerly the Five Sisters Lodge, and still often called by that name, this hotel is located in the heart of the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, about 61m (200 ft.) above its (previous) namesake Five Sisters Falls, a beautiful and rambling series of waterfalls and swimming holes. Many of the rooms feature a spectacular view right over the falls. The individual cottages have tropical hardwood floors, thatched roofs, and beds hung with mosquito netting. All feature a mix of local and Guatemalan furnishings and decor, as well as a screened-in veranda hung with a hammock. The best room here, although it’s a good distance from the main lodge, is the Riverside Villa, a luxurious cabin set down by the river and falls. There are 300 stairs between the bottom and top of the falls, but Gaia recently installed a cable tram for those who can’t manage the incline. Food on property is top notch, with fresh fish brought in from its sister property, the Matachica on Ambergris Caye, and veggies grown in the garden. Note: Guests 16 years of age or older only.
