Nearest Green Distillery
In 2016, a hidden truth about Tennessee whiskey surfaced. It was actually Nathan “Nearest” Green, an enslaved man, who taught young Jack Daniel the Lincoln County Process. Finding that truth was a wild ride: It took 20 experts 2,500 hours of research in order for Green’s descendants to be sure, but today it’s widely accepted that Green is the first known African American Master Distiller in history. Five years and $50 million later, the 323-acre farm launched its first Uncle Nearest spirit in 2017. They make the whiskey the same way Green did—filtering clear creek water through sugar-maple charcoal and aging it in charred oak barrels—and you can taste the precision and intention in every sip. Uncle Nearest has been the most awarded bourbon and American whiskey from 2019-2023, and on top of all that history, a visit there will allow you to pull up a seat to the world’s longest bar (yes, really) in the most modern, upscale distillery I’ve ever set foot in. If you’ve come to taste the true roots of Tennessee whiskey, Uncle Nearest is the new can’t-miss.
