The epitome of “old school,” Sperry’s is a tavern-like steakhouse that’s known for its meat, serve-yourself salad bar, and classic cocktails. If you go for dinner, Sperry’s is going to break your bank, but here’s a work-around: If you’re out near Cheekwood or the Belle Meade Plantation, stop off for happy hour. On weekdays from 5 to 7pm, they serve high-end appetizers (jumbo shrimp cocktail, escargot in garlic butter, smoked salmon, prime rib sliders) for just $8. Made with trimmings from the previous night’s prime rib, the sliders sell out daily, so order as soon as you’re seated. The fresh bread board is free and comes in very handy to soak up the half-priced martini that’s also on offer at happy hour.
