Nelson Provincial Museum

This little museum should be your first stop in town as it will give you an overview of Maori history and early European settlement in Te Tau Iho—the Top of the South. It houses a number of handsome historical books, fascinating Maori artifacts, a fabulous silver collection, antique furniture, and a new stained glass window populated by native birds and plants. The former museum building in Isel Park, Stoke now houses the research center, which includes one of the largest historical photograph collections in New Zeland and a comprehensive reference library on local history.
