Originally an artistic commune that threw house parties, this wildly creative, often psychedelic “temple of expression” (their apt term) is now devoted almost exclusively to events. Nights here are fueled by DJ’s, dancing, and performances (circus skills, burlesque, drag, and dance), and most parties have a theme, which they try to make all-encompassing by rewarding those who show up in the most appropriate costumes with free drink tickets. You can upgrade your look at the “Beauty Bar” in a room adjacent to the dance floor (see below) where a make up artist patiently applies glitter, temporary tattoos, and more, for an extra fee. It all feels like Manhattan’s version of Burning Man.

House of Yes in Brooklyn

In November of 2021, House of X, a Manhattan off-shoot of the original, opened in the Public Hotel (215 Chrystie St.) It’s fun, but its smaller space and spooky bordello theme are not quite as transporting as the original. Note that those who purchase tickets to either, well in advance, usually get in at the lowest price (you’ll pay the most if you simply pay at the door).
