Hotels in Nice
Hotels in Nice are a mix of the good, the bad, and the ugly. For those who can afford to splash out, seafront hotels such as the palatial Palais de la Méditerranée or the discreet La Pérouse are bound to impress. If you're traveling outside peak season, you may find five-star hotels offering website deals that are cheaper than standard tariffs of midrange hotels.
Accommodations are often disappointing: Expect three-star quality from four-star hotels. If you want to find value, you may have to compromise on a location further away from the Vieille Ville. There are exceptional places here, including contemporary Le Dortoir, art-loving Hôtel Windsor, well-priced Villa La Tour, and peaceful Villa Les Cygnes. Chain hotel brands can provide a reliable bet, although those along the beachside promenade des Anglais sometimes abuse their premium location. Worth a look are Best Western (www.bestwestern.fr; Hôtel Roosevelt and Hôtel Riviera) and Mercure (www.mercure.com; Nice Promenade des Anglais and Nice Marché aux Fleurs). The Holiday Inn (www.holidayinn.com) at 20 bd. Victor Hugo is also a good bet.
Moderate -- In addition to the recommendations in this guide, peace seekers and romantics with a car may want to consider the luxurious Villa Kilauea (tel. 04-93-37-84-90; www.villakilauea.com) in the hills behind Nice, near prestigious vineyard Château Bellet.
