Memory Lane

For a change in the Victorian-era obsessed Maritimes, the recent past is celebrated at this 1940s heritage village museum. (The interpretation period includes World War II.) The village encompasses a school, a church, barns, houses, and a fascinating gold miners’ shack and work shed where visitors can operate rock-crushing machinery. A recording is triggered in each building as people enter, immersing them in the sounds of the time. Barnyard animals peck and graze about the yard. Cookhouse meals and picnic lunches are great fun; a very basic menu, yes, but that’s in keeping with the historical character of the place. And the baked beans, brown bread, gingerbread with rhubarb sauce, and fresh lemonade served in glass milk bottles are all delicious (and just C$18/adult, less with admission to the village). The cookhouse itself is a recreated mining camp building with plank tables. Elsewhere, there’s a general store with loads of goods that will make some nostalgic.
