Sometimes when we've had enough of H. C. Andersen and his fairy tales, we like to secure the makings of a picnic lunch and escape to this bird sanctuary and park 20km (12 miles) southwest of Odense near the village of Tommerup. Some 200 different species of pheasants, ducks, geese, storks, ostriches, parrots, owls, and other birds from all parts of the world live here. There are more than 120 aviaries and some 20 parkland areas in an old farm setting, with many flowers, bushes, and trees. You can enjoy coffee and homemade pastries in the cafe on-site.
