Where to Stay

You can hang your hat at any number of chain hotels and motels across the state, as well as its numerous bed-and-breakfasts and campground facilities. The state travel planner mentioned above lists all (or, certainly, most) lodging by location in the state, and also provides handy charts with each lodging's amenities and contact information.

Several hotels in Ohio's major cities also have been revamped recently. Cleveland's Crowne Plaza Hotel City Centre (tel. 877/424-4225; www.clevelandhotels.crowneplaza.com), formerly the Sheraton, just underwent a massive renovation, has great views of Lake Erie, and is the closest major hotel to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In Columbus, two hotels offer new indoor water parks: the Cherry Valley Lodge in Newark (tel. 800/788-8008; www.cherryvalleylodge.com), and the Holiday Inn Columbus East (tel. 800/423-0908; www.ichotelsgroup.com). Also new in Columbus is a Courtyard Marriott, on the west end of the city (tel. 877/477-5817; www.marriott.com). Particularly lovely, though, is the family-friendly Atwood Lake Resort (tel. 800/362-6406; www.atwoodlakeresort.com), which sits alongside its eponymous lake in Dellroy, recently underwent a $3-million renovation of its 104 rooms, and has an 18-hole golf course, an indoor pool, a fitness center, bike and running trails. Also near Columbus in the heart of Amish country is the Inn at Honey Run (tel. 800/708-9394; www.innathoneyrun.com). Set in the verdant countryside of Holmes Country, the honeycomb rooms are particularly unique, as they are literally dug into the side of a hill and shaped as their name suggests.

Cincinnati has two new offerings: a Sheraton in Sharonville, on the city's north end (tel. 513/771-2080; www.starwoodhotels.com/sheraton), and a Hilton Garden Inn near Blue Ash (tel. 513/576-6999; www.hiltongardeninn.hilton.com). There's also a new Drury Inn in Dayton (tel. 937/454-5200; www.druryhotels.com).
