Hotel La Badia

This 12th-century abbey has been a hotel since 1968 and is one of Orvieto's best accommodations, albeit out of the town proper. The property is undeniably atmospheric, but it's not for everyone. Some rooms are palatial, others quite cramped; a few even have lofts and can sleep families without crowding, but the smallest rooms are best avoided. The suites are roomy, and those in the outbuilding connected to the church have Jacuzzis and a view of Orvieto up on its rocky perch. Bathrooms on the first floor have been renovated, but the older ones throughout La Badia carry their age well. Make sure you duck into the Romanesque church to see the frescoes and gorgeous cosmatesque-style floor.
