Catedral de San Salvador

The original church—now little more than the foundation—dates to the 8th century, but the current cathedral was begun at the end of the 13th century and completed in the late 16th century. Inside is an altarpiece in the florid Gothic style, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The cathedral’s 9th-century Cámara Santa (Holy Chamber) is famous for the Cross of Don Pelayo, the Cross of the Victory, and the Cross of the Angels, the finest specimens of Asturian art in the world. The pieces show the evolution of the already highly sophisticated goldsmithing of the Visigoths. There’s a separate 10€ admission to ascend the 15–story Gothic tower, but it’s a challenging 184–step climb. See website to reserve tickets.
