Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias

There’s a civic tendency in parts of Spain to dump all the art that used to be in churches and private collections into one big museum. The same is true of this museum, but it does an admirable job of representing Spanish painting and sculpture from the 14th to 21st centuries. Examples from other European countries are only of passing interest, but there are some extraordinary Spanish works here, including one of only three sets of portraits of the apostles painted by El Greco, plus a marvelous multi–panel representation of the martyrdom and life of Santa Marina. (In one panel, she is miraculously resurrected from the split belly of a dragon.)
