Buccan
Buccan is the 21st century Palm Beach, a hopping, contemporary American eatery, with excellent lighting, a current soundtrack, and Clay Conley, a rock star chef with multiple James Beard awards. On the plates here: crudo including a fantastic Hamachi tiradito with Peruvian chiles, lotus root, and yuzu; plant-based beauties in the form of crispy squash blossom Rangoon with lion’s mane mushrooms, cream cheese, chili crisp, and a sweet and sour sauce; an elevated hot dog panini with sauerkraut, gruyere, mustard, and chili; homemade pastas (such as the sweet corn agnolotti with ricotta and bacon); and a fabulous Florida grouper Scaloppine with local wax beans, tomato, olive, and fennel. Service is fast and friendly, but those who want a quiet dinner should go elsewhere. Fave dessert? The house-fashioned peanut butter cup made with plant-based peanut butter mousse, chocolate ganache, and vanilla frozen yogurt. The bar is small, but always busy, and worthy of before or after dinner drink if you can squeeze in.
Located directly next door is 40-seat sibling sushi spot whose name literally means “Little Sister” in Japanese, Imoto at Buccan (tel. 561/833-5522), featuring fresh sushi, sashimi, dumplings, tempura and sake. Also adjacent to the restaurant is Buccan Sandwich Shop (tel. 561/833-6295), serving made-to-order hot and cold sandwiches (like the Buccan Steak Bomb: prime NY strip, cheese sauce, lettuce, tomato, peppers, onions, and smoked paprika aioli on a baguette). Another location is at 1901 S. Dixie Hwy. in West Palm (tel. 561/469-1917), which also houses Grato, (tel. 561/404-1334) Conley’s swell Italian joint. Conley has plans to bring his greatest hits to Coral Gables in Miami in 2025, taking Buccan, Imoto and Buccan Sandwich Shop into a collective 9,600 square foot space at 100 Miracle Mile.
