Teatro Reggio
Besides collecting art in the Palazzo della Pilotta, Duchess Marie-Louise also enriched Parma’s cultural life in 1829 by building the Teatro Reggio. Still considered one of the world’s finest music theaters, it hosts an opera season that rivals Milan’s. Particularly favored are the operas of Giuseppe Verdi, composer of “Il Trovatore” and “Aïda,” who was born outside Parma in 1813 and later lived with his mistress, soprano Giuseppina Strepponi, in nearby Busseto. Villa Verdi shows off their personal effects, pianos, portraits, and the bed upon which the maestro died in Milan in 1901 (www.villaverdi.org; tel. 0523/830-210; 9 euros; Tues–Sun 9:30–11:45am and 2:30–6:15pm [closes 4:30pm Nov–Mar]). Each October, Parma celebrates the Verdi Festival, with concerts and performances in the Teatro Reggio and other venues.
