East of Payson on Ariz. 260 are several national forest campgrounds. These include Upper Tonto Creek and Christopher Creek campgrounds, which are the best developed and most scenic in the Payson area. Neither of these campgrounds takes reservations. Information is available from the Payson Ranger Station, 1009 E. Ariz. 260 (www.fs.fed.us/r3/tonto; tel. 928/474-7900), at the east end of town.
