There are lots of places with character to stay in Petersburg, more than we have room to describe in full. (www.dashagedornhouse.com; tel. 907/772-3775), where a wonderfully hospitable couple rents a full apartment in their historic home for $80 to $110 high season, including amenities such as Wi-Fi, free laundry machines, and a full breakfast cooked to order. They do not take credit cards.
Camping -- The closest natural camping is found 22 miles out the Mitkof Highway at Ohmer Creek. Twin Creek RV Park is 7 1/2 miles out the highway (www.twincreekrv.com; tel. 907/772-3244) and charges $28 for full hookups, $15 for tent camping. Showers are $3 extra.
