Also for lunch, try a loaf of whole-wheat bread with a swirl of cheese and sautéed vegetables baked inside. Hours are Monday through Friday 8am to 4pm. You'll have to take out your meal, as the bakery has no seating. Java Hus, by Scandia House at 110 N. Nordic Dr. (tel. 907/772-2626), is a bright, comfortable spot for coffee and a snack, open summer Monday through Saturday 6am to 6pm, Sunday 7am to 5pm; winter closing an hour earlier each day.
For terrific takeout pizza or calzone, burgers, fried fish, or other casual choices, try Papa Bear's Pizza (tel. 907/772-3727; www.papabearspizza.com), above Coastal Cold Storage at Excel Street and Nordic Drive. The owners are fanatics in search of the perfect pizza, and it shows. The pizzeria is open in summer Monday through Saturday 11am to 9pm, Saturday and Sunday 3 to 8pm (in winter Mon-Sat 11am-8pm, closed Sun). It is one of the better bets in town.
Helse, 13 Sing Lee Alley (tel. 907/772-3444), is a popular lunch spot serving soup, salads, and specials. It's open year-round Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 3pm.
