On the edge of the ASU campus, this outdoor structure is more of the work of artist James Turrell, known for his large public constructions that play with space and color. It’s basically a giant open-air cabana with a roof suspended above it—a roof with a large square opening in the middle. Inside the cabana, the walls are lined with benches. The idea is that you sit, look up, and watch—here’s the catch—either sunrise or sunset through the giant square skylight, which is enhanced with subtly shifting lights, which in turn manage to change the color of the sky beyond. The schlep there at sunrise or sunset is slightly inconvenient, but it’s a great experience.
