This is a spectacular new addition to the city arts scene—two vast floors of Western art and artifacts in an impressive facility. There’s a giant room with Western artifacts, swimmingly presented, from saddlebags to faro games. You can get lost in the art galleries, which have been populated by the most prominent Western art collectors in the country. The exhibitions are of an exceedingly high quality; a recent one was built around a spectacular collection of hundreds of Western movie posters, some of them gigantic. Tip: The opening film can easily be given a pass. In it and elsewhere in the museum, you’ll sense a romanticized view of cowboys and Indians that says too little about the realities of that era.
