The Hotel Northampton

Opened in 1927, the historic Hotel Northampton has been the preferred place to stay for generations of parents visiting Smith College students, tourists who prefer to be in the thick of downtown, and numerous celebs and dignitaries, including five U.S. presidents, David Bowie, Tom Cruise, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, and Her Holiness Oprah Winfrey.

On the way to a lobby outfitted with a fireplace and period furnishings, you'll pass through an inviting glassed-in front porch, where rocking chairs, an abundance of plants, and windows showing off lively downtown Northampton make lingering pretty much mandatory.

The hotel's dining options include a cafe serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as cocktails at the bar. A renowned Sunday brunch buffet is held at the onsite Wiggins Tavern, a replica of an 18th-century New Hampshire pub.

Although guest rooms could probably use a style update, they're comfortable and huge. Note that availability may be limited during graduation, homecoming, and other events at the region's many colleges and universities, as well as during the end-of-year holidays. Each December 31, Northampton's New Year's Eve celebrations culminate in a glittery ball getting raised (as opposed to dropped) on the hotel's roof.
