RIU Guanacaste, RIU Palace Costa Rica
With over 1,200 rooms, a half-dozen swimming pools, and almost a dozen bars, these massive side-by-side all-inclusive resorts might remind you of spring break in Cabo or Cancún. In the high season the bars, buffets, and pools are brimming with sunburned revelers looking to max out on the free-flowing booze, food, and myriad activities. Still, rooms are large and well equipped, with private balconies, and at the more upscale RIU Palace they are truly sumptuous. Another plus: The two resorts have the wide, crescent-shaped Playa Matapalo all to themselves. So while the complex doesn’t feel at all Costa Rican, some enjoy it for the non-stop activities, the palatable food, and a casino that’s always bustling with optimists.
