Porec Attractions
Poreč’s Old Town is small, but it is packed with treasures, chief of which is the Euphrasius Basilica and its stunning mosaics. The rest of Old Town’s attractions pale in comparison, although they’re interesting enough to warrant a walk-through. Note that the Poreč Regional Museum (www.muzejporec.hr) is closed for renovation and will not reopen before 2017.
The Legend of Baredine Cave
Baredine’s love story is a sad one that originated in the 13th century. According to the legend, a highborn young man named Gabriel fell in love with a beautiful shepherdess named Milka from Nova Vas. Gabriel’s mother didn’t approve of her son consorting with a mere farm girl and when she couldn’t dissuade him from the romance, she hired bandits to kill the girl. Instead of killing her, the robbers took the mother’s three pieces of gold and threw Milka into Baredine Cave. When Gabriel discovered the treachery, he supposedly tried to rescue his beloved and disappeared. (Gabriel’s horse was found wandering near the cave, so it was presumed he had gone in to find Milka, but neither was heard from again.) The legend goes on to say that Milka’s body eventually turned to stone in the cave and is slowly sinking to another chamber where Gabriel has been waiting for her for centuries.
