Hotels in Portland OR
The hotel scene, like every other scene in Portland, has changed dramatically in the last quarter-century. For one thing, Portland now has one. The city used to be plain Jane when it came to lodging, but now there is a raft of stylish, comfortable hotels of all levels of sophistication, including three brand new (the Hi-Lo downtown and Hampton Inn & Suites in the Pearl District) and two dramatic makeovers (Hotel Vintage and the Dossier, both downtown) in 2017, with more scheduled to open in 2018. The large, classic hotels are all downtown, but so are a wide range of mid-size and smaller boutique hotels. Most of the downtown hotels have well-known and popular restaurants and lounges attached to them, and from downtown it’s easy to get everywhere by public transportation. I’ve included a couple of excellent B&Bs that give a good perspective on different Portland neighborhoods, and a great hostel in northwest. The prices listed are for a double room in low season (winter) and high season (July–Aug).
Travel Portland, 701 SW Sixth Ave., Portland, OR 97205 (www.travelportland.com; 📞 877/678-5263 or 503/275-9293) provides a hotel reservation service for the Portland metro area. For information on B&Bs in the Portland area, contact the Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild (www.obbg.org; 📞 800/944-6196). And, of course, there are many rental options in private homes to be found on Airbnb (www.airbnb.com). HomeAway (www.homeaway.com), and VRBO (www.vrbo.com) and other rental sites. These websites, offering rooms in private homes and sometimes entire apartments, are legal to use in Portland. A check of available Airbnb properties for early 2018 showed 18 private rooms ranging in price from $55 to $100. HomeAway listed some 150 apartments (not rooms) throughout the city, including some very desirable neighborhoods, for prices ranging from $65 to $135 a night. These prices are typically at least $25 to $50 less than what you’d pay for a hotel room just about anywhere in Portland.

Ace Hotel
No other hotel captures Portland’s independent spirit better than the Ace. It’s an environment unto itself, with a Stumptown coffee bar on one side of the lobby and Clyde Commons restaurant on the other. In between, the lobby is anything but fancy-schmancy, so younger travelers won’t…$$Pearl District - Hotel
Aloft Portland Airport at Cascade Station
A quirky take on the standard business hotel by the airport, the Aloft offers spacious loft-inspired rooms and easy access to both the airport and the MAX light rail into the city. Colorful but minimalist design touches, like the lime-green couches on the patio, keep things stylish…$Around Town - Hotel
Caravan
When's the last time you stayed somewhere so portable you could conceivably have taken it home with you? This unique boutique hotel consists of four self-contained, trailer-mounted, custom-made "tiny houses," each between 120-160 square feet and sleeping 2-4 people.…$$Alberta Arts District - Hotel
Crystal Hotel
Like the Ace , the Crystal epitomizes a certain Portland aesthetic that is basic, down-to-earth. In fact, the rooms with shared bathrooms at the Crystal are the best deals in town. The hotel was created by the McMenamins, the Portland entrepreneur brothers who invented a whole new…$Downtown - Hotel
Dossier
Dossier opened in summer 2017 after a complete remake of a rather bland Westin hotel from the 1980s. The new owners have given it a sophisticated elegance without sacrificing comfort. The lobby is surprisingly small and seems somewhat disconnected from the rest of the hotel. But once…$$$Downtown - Hotel
Embassy Suites
The rooms don’t have all the fashionista frou-frou of downtown’s smaller boutique hotels, or the restrained elegance of the Benson, but when you enter the lobby of this enormous hotel—with its intricate columns, gilding, and plasterwork— you know you have entered someplace special.…$$Downtown - Hotel
Everett Street Guesthouse
This is a good, comfortable, neighborhood B&B that charms with its intimate scale, calm good taste, and rooms decorated with interesting artwork instead of formal spaces loaded with fussy frou-frou. The 1907 Craftsman-style house is typical of the handsome and well-built family…$Southeast Portland - Hotel
Hampton Inn & Suites
This large Hilton-brand hotel opened in September 2017 and is the only hotel in the heart of the Pearl District. It’s location, right on the North Park Blocks, is pretty unique and it’s moderate price makes it a good choice for business travelers and families with kids. Like other…$$Pearl District - Hotel
Heron Haus Bed & Breakfast
Hidden on a hillside in Northwest Portland, Heron Haus has been welcoming visitors since 1986. The 10,000-square-foot Tudor-style house was built in 1904 for salmon baron Frank M. Warren, Sr., whose canneries netted him a fortune (Warrendale in the Columbia Gorge and Warrenton near…$$Nob Hill & Northwest Portland - Hotel
Hi-Lo
The sophisticated and stylish Hi-Lo opened in summer 2017 in the 1910 Oregon Pioneer Building. It’s a pretty unique place and a wonderful reuse of a wonderful old Portland building. The lobby is a vast, open space with giant windows, curvy sofas and even swings if you’re so inclined.…$$$Downtown - Hotel
Hotel deLuxe
Years ago this was the Mallory Hotel, which started life pretty grand back in 1912, but by the 1990s was in need of a facelift. (A notable exception being the hotel’s famous Driftwood Room, a classic and much-cherished time capsule of the 1950s.) The revamped hotel has a Southern…$$Downtown - Hotel
Hotel Lućia
It’s not every hotel that uses 40 years’ worth of photographs by White House photographer David Hume Kennerly to decorate its lounge and corridors. But the Lućia, downtown Portland’s most stylish boutique hotel, has the world’s largest collection of Kennerly prints, and they are…$$Downtown - Hotel
Hotel Modera
Even before you step inside the Hotel Modera, the garden courtyard (with it’s "living wall" of vertical plantings), gravel patio, and outdoor fire pits signal this is a sophisticated, yet cozy, place. The Modera was refashioned from a 1950’s motel, and today has a bold, contemporary…$$Downtown - Hotel
Hotel Monaco
Whenever I’m in this big, cheerful hotel, I can never quite forget that it was once the Frederick & Nelson department store. It’s been the Hotel Monaco since 1996, when it became the first new hotel in downtown Portland to be fashioned from an existing historic building.…$$Downtown - Hotel
Hotel Vintage
The Hotel Vintage underwent a rather dramatic makeover in 2016. The long-established Kimpton property was always a wine-themed hotel, and it still is, but the rather staid interior décor was completely re-imagined for a younger Portland demographic. Fittingly, the lobby bar and is…$$Downtown - Hotel
Inn @ Northrup Station
This boutique hotel right in the heart of the Northwest/Nob Hill/NW 23rd neighborhood is anything but dull. Vivid mix-and-match colors and retro-style furniture enliven the rooms and public areas, almost forcing you to be cheerful. Then again, there’s quite a lot to be cheerful about…$$Nob Hill & Northwest Portland - Hotel
Jupiter Hotel
If you’re looking for a quiet, room-service-and-fluffy-bathrobes kind of hotel, the Jupiter isn’t for you. It will likely fit in with your budget,…$Southeast Portland - Hotel
Lion and the Rose Victorian B&B Inn
This 1905 Queen Anne building in the quiet, historic Irvington District oozes elegance from its oak floors to its coffered ceilings. Each of the eight rooms is different, with Edwardian armoires, claw-foot tubs, and whirlpool baths in some, and the home-cooked breakfasts in the…$$Irvington - Hotel
McMenamins Crystal Hotel
The latest entry in the McMenamin brothers' Portland empire, this rock 'n' roll guesthouse is just across the street from the Crystal Ballroom, a century-old live music venue downtown. The 1911 building has seen uses as a glove factory and a tire shop, and now houses a hotel for…$Downtown - Hotel
McMenamins Kennedy School
This former elementary school (built in 1915) has been brought back to life as possibly the most unusual hotel in town. There's colorful hand-painted art on the walls, a couch-filled movie-theater pub, a brewery, and a saltwater soaking pool outdoors, for starters. Choose from two…$$Around Town - Hostel
Northwest Portland Hostel
This Hostel International (HI) complex consists of five adjacent properties—the newest one opened in 2017—clustered around an outdoor courtyard-lounge area that’s great for late-night hanging out. There are endless sleeping configurations, including 4-, 6- and 8-bunk dorm rooms (some…$ - Hotel
Portland Mayor’s Mansion
When you stay at this imposing Colonial Revival red-brick mansion on Laurelhurst Park in southeast Portland, you are staying in a piece of Portland history. Mayor H. Russell Albee had it built in 1912 for use as his summer home. Albee’s architect was A. E. Doyle, the man who designed…$$ - Hotel
Portland's White House B&B
At least from the outside, the huge white columns and circular driveway of Portland's White House evoke the one in D.C., albeit on a smaller scale. Inside, this 1910 Greek Revival mansion (also a National Historic Landmark) is full of crystal chandeliers, oriental rugs, stained-glass…$$Irvington - Hotel
RiverPlace Hotel
Located on the waterfront esplanade at the south end of Tom McCall Waterfront Park, RiverPlace is the only downtown Portland hotel right on the Willamette River. Sentinel
The hotel occupies two great historic buildings in downtown Portland: The giant, Renaissance palazzo–style former Elks Club (West Wing)—this must have been the grandest Elks Club in the country—and the lovely former Governor Hotel (East Wing). The decor is the same throughout, but…$Downtown - Hotel
Silver Cloud Inn Northwest Portland
This hotel is on the edge of Portland's trendy Nob Hill neighborhood, and though it's also near an industrial area, it is still an attractive and comfortable place. While the rooms fronting Vaughn Street are well insulated against traffic noise, I still prefer the rooms on the other…$$Nob Hill & Northwest Portland - Hotel
The Benson Hotel
Three words: Obama stayed here. The Benson was built in 1912, the same year the hotel that became the Ace checked in its first guests. But the two could hardly be more different in scale, scope, and style. The Benson is Portland’s premier “old” hotel; it’s called “The Residence of…$$Downtown - Hotel
The Heathman Hotel
Next to Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall ("the Schnitz" to locals), this old-school, boutique downtown hotel boasts doormen clad like British Beefeaters, and a library full of signed first editions from authors who have stayed here. Singers and production crews from the Portland Opera and the casts of touring Broadway shows always stay at the Mark Spencer. Translation: This is a good hotel for extended stays—and for families, as the suites have nice little working kitchens. It’s not the most glamorous of…$$Downtown - Hotel
The Nines
The Nines was created on the top nine floors of the old Meier & Frank department store, a Portland retail icon since the 1920s. Clark Gable worked here before he was a star, and the city’s first escalator graced the store. The Nines, as in “dressed to . . .” honors the defunct…$$$Downtown - Hotel
The Society Hotel
This is the best hotel deal in Portland and a place where you can enjoy a memorable stay in the heart of the city for a fraction of what you’d pay at a fancier hotel a few blocks away.
