This is the best hotel deal in Portland and a place where you can enjoy a memorable stay in the heart of the city for a fraction of what you’d pay at a fancier hotel a few blocks away. Located in still-gritty Old Town/Chinatown, The Society Hotel occupies a late-19th-century building that was originally a hotel for sailors and later used as a Chinese dance hall. Today it is a combined hotel and hostel, but one with well-designed charm. The cheapest option is to rent a bunk bed in the open dorm area. Each bunk has an outlet for recharging your phone, a reading light, a privacy curtain and, best of all, a comfortable mattress. Next up are the small rooms with shared bathrooms. They have windows, a sink, and robes. Then there are the rooms with en-suite bathrooms. On the first floor there’s a nice café that serves coffee, food and bar drinks. Best of all, there’s a roof terrace with great city views. The Society (as in Sailors’ Society, not high society), which opened in 2015, is within easy walking distance of downtown and just 2 blocks from two MAX light rail lines.
