For tours of the Putre area, there are several operators on Baquedano -- including Ankas Adventure, at no. 439 (tel. 98/963-9599; ankasadventure@hotmail.com); Mayuru Tour, at no. 411 (tel. 98/999-0173 and 98/963-9599; www.mayurutour.com); and Tourandino, at no. 340 (tel. 9/011-0702; www.tourandino.com) -- that offer tours of the surrounding areas and farther afield, including to the Lauca and Volcán Isluga national parks, to the colonial and Aymara villages of the area, and two day tours to the Salar de Surire. Tourandino also offers climbs to the area's high summits. Another experienced outfit, Alto Andino (tel. 9/282-6195; www.birdingaltoandino.com), run by U.S. naturalist Barbara Knapton, focuses on wildlife, with programs in the altiplano and also along the coast. She also offers accommodations for tour participants.
