If you're here only for a brief stay, the altitude will likely stunt your appetite, which is perhaps as well since high altitude doesn't mean haute cuisine. The food is basic but authentically Andean. There are a handful of rustic restaurants in town; the godsend is K'uchu Marka on Baquedano, which caters mostly to tourists and has a cozy, rustic atmosphere. It has set meals for $7 (£4.70) featuring typical ingredients such as alpaca meat and quinoa, rabbit stew, and a couple of standout vegetarian dishes. It also offers sandwiches at $2 to $5 (£1.30-£3.30). Rosamel on the square is a bit cheaper with set meals for $3.60 (£2.40), but the food, including hearty stews and local meats, is generally bland and uninspired.
