Karalis Beach Hotel
With the best location in town -- at the end of the harbor below the Turkish kastro, near a stand of pine trees, far from most traffic -- this used to be a special place to stay. But at some point, the management became haphazard, housekeeping became casual, and the lobby became a hangout for chain-smoking buddies of the desk clerks. In short, the reason to stay here is the location, especially if you get one of the seaside rooms with a balcony. The hotel often overbooks and sends its overflow to the Karalis Hotel, Kalamateas 26 (tel. 27230/22-980), which is under the same management. Resist if they try this on you: the rooms here are okay, but the place is a hike from the harbor and restaurants and there's lots of traffic noise.
