Bearskin Neck holds what may be the highest concentration of gift shops in New England. The narrow peninsula has one main street (South Road) and several alleys crammed with shops, galleries, snack bars, and ancient houses. Dozens of little shops here carry clothes, gifts, toys, jewelry, souvenirs, inexpensive novelties, and expensive handmade crafts and paintings. The peninsula ends in a plaza with a magnificent water view.

Along Main and Mount Pleasant streets, the shopping has more of a retro flavor. Family-owned since 1929, Tuck’s Candy & Gifts (tel. 978/546-6352) still operates at its original location, 15 Main St. And you can watch taffy being made at Tuck’s Candy Factory, 7 Dock Square (tel. 978/546-2840). Near the train station, Crackerjacks, 27 Whistlestop Mall, off Railroad Avenue (tel. 978/546-1616), is an old-fashioned variety store with a great crafts department.
