Saint John Ale House

The name implies pub—indeed, the craft beer selection here is the best in the city, with brews from across the Maritimes, and the nightlife scene attracts crowds of young revelers. But the food is also surprisingly good. Chef Jesse Vergen is among the best in Canada and goes out of his way to find locally sourced foods you can’t get anywhere else. His smoked mackerel and barbequed eel are packed with flavor. The country ham and certain cuts of beef is dry aged for several years before serving. There’s an unforgettable ribeye steak but it’ll set you back C$69; luckily, there’s a lot more worth exploring on the menu for a lot less.
