Italian By Night
You walk into a restaurant and find it packed on a random Monday night? Bingo! You know you’ve stumbled upon the best restaurant in town. But don’t try to come to this locals’ fave without reservations as you’ll likely be (politely) turned away. Saint John’s best takes its inspiration from the restaurants of Tuscany, from the hot towels given to diners before their meals, to such meaty mains as lamb shank with citrus gremolata and fried polenta. Of course, they also do toothsome pastas, and toss a mean pie, with a full slate of thin-crusted, stone baked pizzas also available on gluten-free crusts. For a truly memorable evening, sit at the chef’s table (C$125 per guest Mon–Thurs) which overlooks the kitchen and gives you a taste of all of this restaurant’s very special specialties.
By the way: Italian By Night has its name because the restaurant started as a side project of a local deli (though it now has its own chic and moody space). Urban Deli (at 68 King St.) is still a primo place to grab a Montreal-style smoked meat sandwich during the day.
